What do you think has caused the actual plague of jellyfish?

Results of 31st August 2006

This summer an unusual high amount of jellyfish can be found along the shores of Malta. Tourism suffers from this, too. But what are the reasons? Why are there so many jellyfish this year? What do you think has caused this plague of jellyfish?

Between 10th and 24th August 2006 over 400 people participated in this online poll. Thank you very much!

Here the details:

462 votes were cast in this poll.

Unfortunately, there were 10 people who voted more than one time. The votes of these 10 people had to be made invalid in order to obtain a result which is more honest and true.
So the number of valid votes was 401.

Here the percentages that the various answers got:
Pollution of the sea:                         24 votes  =   5,99 %
Global warming:                               92 votes  =  22,94 %
Overfishing (tuna) of the sea:                43 votes  =  10,72 %
A combination of all above:                  160 votes  =  39,90 %
Nothing specifically. It is a natural cycle:  82 votes  =  20,45 %

INTERPRETATIONS:

A clear majority of sixty per cent of the people believe that we, human beings, are responsible for the plague of jellyfish as a result of pollution, global warming and overfishing. If the ecosystem is unbalanced, it can be felt not just by plants or animals, but also by the people. However, the biggest fraction, but still not the absolute majoritiy of voters, believes that is is just part of the natural cycle, which would mean that plagues of jellyfish can happen in regular or irregular periods of time.

The editor would like to point out, that this poll is not representative for the whole country. However, it gives a clear indication anyway.

The people are aware of the situation. Searching for the reasons at yourself is a first step to avoid further destruction of nature.
