Are you proud to be a citizen of the European Union?

Results of 30th November 2006

More than two and a half years have passed since Malta joined the European Union. Since 1st May 2004 Malta is a full EU member state with all priviliges and duties.

What do the Maltese people think about it? Have they identified themselves as EU citizens yet and are they happy or even proud about it?

Between 12th and 30th November 2006 a bit more than 110 people participated in this online poll. Thank you very much!

Here the details:

122 votes were cast in this poll.

Unfortunately, there were 4 people who voted more than one time. The votes of these 4 people had to be made invalid in order to obtain a result which is more honest and true.
So the number of valid votes was 114.

Here the percentages that the various answers got:
Yes:                               75 votes   =   65,79 %
No:                                26 votes   =   22,81 %
I can't say.:                      13 votes   =   11,40 %

INTERPRETATIONS:

Almost two thirds are proud to be EU citizens. They identify themselves with the EU, they identify themselves as Europeans. Only two out of ten are not proud. They probably see the EU citizenship not as important as the Maltese one. Eleven per cent of the people could not give a clear answer.

The editor would like to point out, that this poll is not representative for the whole country. However, it gives a clear indication anyway.

The poor participation in this poll shows that the country's EU membership is not a top issue anymore. It is not seen as important as years back. And people have accepted the situation and they have got used to it.
