Would you accept higher taxes for better roads?

Results of 30th November 2006

The majority of Maltese roads is still in a bad state. But massive financial aid from Italy and the EU has helped to improve the road network on the islands. New and better roads do cost money. And this money will not always come from Rome or from Brussels. So higher taxes could be one way to cover the expenses for road works.

But would the Maltese taxpayer agree with this policy? Would you accept higher taxes for better roads?

Between 12th and 30th November 2006 more than 200 people participated in this online poll. Thank you very much!

Here the details:

223 votes were cast in this poll.

Unfortunately, there were 6 people who voted more than one time. The votes of these 6 people had to be made invalid in order to obtain a result which is more honest and true.
So the number of valid votes was 211.

Here the percentages that the various answers got:

Yes:                               99 votes   =   46,92 %
No:                               104 votes   =   49,29 %
I don't know.:                      8 votes   =    3,79 %

INTERPRETATIONS:

The difference between the number of supporters and the number of opposers is small. Almost as many are against as in favour of higher taxes for better roads.
It shows two things: Many people would pay for more comfort. And many people expect other financing sources than higher taxes.

The editor would like to point out, that this poll is not representative for the whole country. However, it gives a clear indication anyway.

What is more acceptable, bad roads or higher taxes?
